MARLBORO, N.Y. -- A Marlboro woman has been arrested after an SPCA investigation revealed she had 64 rabbits living in unsanitary conditions without food or water in a trailer.

Ulster County SPCA investigators found one rabbit had died in the trailer where they were all kept. Many of the rabbits had open sores, bites, hair loss and other injuries.

Phyllis Edwards, 64, has been charged with 64 counts of failure to provide proper sustenance under state agriculture and markets law.

The rabbits were brought to the Ulster County SPCA where they are being fed and receiving medical care.

"At this time, the animals are evidence in a crime. As we've done in the past at the Ulster County SPCA, they'll be available for adoption once the case is done, once we prosecute the case and the people who are looking for homes for these rabbits would be able to give them the love and care that they need," said Ulster County SPCA Executive Director Brian Shapiro.

Edwards is due back in the Town of Marlborough court on April 6th. ClientIP:, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
