A 32-year-old Troy man is dead after an early-morning incident at Gold's Gym in Latham where police said he became violent and was tasered by officers. Solomon Syed has the details.

COLONIE, N.Y. -- A morning workout at Gold's Gym in Latham turned deadly Monday morning, when Colonie police used a Taser at least four times on gym member Chad Brothers after they said the 32-year-old became violent.

Colonie Police Chief Steven Heider said, "Actually walked up to another man on an elliptical, intentionally upped the speed on the elliptical, and then struck him in the face with a closed fist."

Police said multiple officers, even aided by other gym members, couldn't subdue the 6'1", 240 pound weight-lifter.

"He tipped over some machines, and these machines, I might add, are about 700 pounds apiece, and they take five people to erect, to stand up alone, and he was knocking them over literally with one hand," the chief said.

Gym member Zach Mafrici said, "I mean people get sometimes into the heat of things, if somebody thinks they're showing somebody up or whatnot, but I've never walked into a gym with a bunch of thrown tables," said another gym member.

As for what caused the Troy man to fly into a fatal fit of rage, police aren't sure if steroids played a factor. He was pronounced dead at Albany Medical Center shortly after the incident from what appears to be a heart attack.

Chief Heider said, "We are still downloading the information, to know exactly how many times, we believe it was between four and five times, and not all in the Taser mode, but some with what's called the stun drive."

Gym member Tara Veresput said, "I cannot believe that the outcome of the whole situation. It's pretty unbelievable."

An autopsy will be performed Tuesday. At that time authorities can determine if Brothers had steroids in his system.

All this comes on the heels of the NYCLU report last week that said Tasers are often used incorrectly and can be deadly. Colonie police are investigating the matter, but believe the use of force was appropriate.
