Local leaders are reacting to the death of an assistant superintendent within the Goshen Central School District. Jane Unhjem died after the single-engine plane she was in crashed on Long Island on Sunday. YNN’s Alexandra Weishaupt has more on the legacy she leaves behind.

GOSHEN, N.Y. -- Hearts were heavy and emotions ran high in Goshen as local leaders remembered their colleague and friend, Jane Unhjem.

“This is one of those extremely unfortunate and tragic situations that happened to us and to our school district,” said Dan Connor, superintendent.

The 60-year-old passed away Sunday night after a fiery plane crash in Shirley that also killed the pilot, and left her husband, Eric, in critical condition. A misfortune felt by so many.

“This district has grown leaps and bounds under her leadership,” said Connor.

“She was a wonderful person, always smiling, always giving guidance,” said James Kimiecik, Goshen School Board president.

Jane worked for the district for eight years, was passionate about the arts, spent countless hours volunteering and was devoted to her family.

“Jane had a contagious warmth about her,” said Doris Obremski, Goshen Rotary Club president.

Goshen Rotary Club President Doris Obremski says she was an active member, taking a particular interest in their youth programs

“There will be a huge void in our club now,” she said.

And a huge void in the community and the school district as she touched the lives of so many.

“Her guidance will be missed greatly,” said Kimiecik.

“We’ll miss Jane forever, she’ll be in our hearts,” said Connor.
