NEW WINDSOR, N.Y. -- A special Veterans Day event was held at the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor in New Windsor on Sunday. The event showcased four veterans who helped to organize a 1932 Purple Heart Award ceremony there for 140 men fought in World War I.

There was also a visual tribute to veterans from many different generations, and a musical homage to America's World War I veterans. Event organizers said the event is to help preserve history.

"It's important because people often forget most of our service people over time were volunteers, and of course, the mid 1970s, every man and woman in our service is a volunteer. So, the warrior is a person we're honoring today, because without them, there would not be this particular nation, at least one day we can say thank you," said Pete Bedrossian, National Purple Heart Hall of Honor Program Director.
