It's been a holiday tradition for one local theater organization. Our Vince Gallagher got a behind-the-scenes look at this year's performance of “The Nutcracker.”

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- It's a milestone for this local organization: 25 consecutive years of performing "The Nutcracker" at Proctors Theater.

"I have people returning to the company every year and this year we have quite a few more people returning to the company to dance," said Darlene Myers, Northeast Ballet Artistic Director.

The Northeast Ballet, under the direction of Darlene Myers, is once again taking this holiday classic to the stage. It's one thing to view this from an audience point of view, but to put this all together takes, well, a lot of ‘steps.’

"It's thousands of hours and majority of it is volunteer, and not all of our ballet performers are paid employees,” said Myers.

You could say this anniversary performance is also somewhat of a family affair, sharing the stage with the other performers are ten mother and daughter dancers, a way of bringing it home for the holidays.

"It's fascinating to see the differences and also the similarities between the mothers and the daughters on the stage and how they work. Just a fascinating experience, and I think it's great for the families in the area to have that," said Myers.

"I am performing and all three of my daughters are performing for the first time and this is my first time back performing with Northeast Ballet since 1993 and I was in the original production 25 years ago,” said Amanda Zenner, “The Nutcracker" performer.

So it's a silver anniversary for her as well. As for Myers, she says her ongoing passion for the arts is what drives her year after year.

"I have a very full artistic life and it's very rewarding...not to say it isn't without challenges, and there are very long hours, but the product is very rewarding," said Myers.
