Since last week's shooting tragedy in Connecticut, many have been calling for changes in gun laws. That includes people in Ellenville, who are taking up a much-debated ban on certain types of guns in the village. YNN's Christian Farrell has more.
ELLENVILLE, N.Y. -- A special meeting took place Thursday night in Ellenville, as the mayor looks into banning residents from owning certain types of guns. Mayor Jeff Kaplan says it's now time to make changes locally in the wake of the Newtown shooting massacre. He's looking to ban handguns, assault weapons, and semi-automatic weapons.
Due to the controversy over the ban, the Ellenville Police Chief says there was a metal detector and screener on hand at the meeting.
The mayor says the ban proposal requires approval from the state. The owner of a local gun shop says taking away guns is not the answer to this problem.
